Short story writer Lucia Berlin was largely unknown until she died in 2004 at 68. Berlin lived in parts of the US, Mexico and Chile, working various jobs to support herself and her four children. Her life is reflected in A Manual for Cleaning Women, a collection of short stories published between the ’60s and ’80s and rereleased in 2015. The collection highlights characters who worked blue-collar jobs designated “for women,” such as cleaners, nurses, switchboard operators and teachers. Local author and lecturer Kimberly Ford Chisholm will read from the book at this fundraiser for Ravenswood Education Foundation’s Literacy Challenge.
