Ani DiFranco’s shadow isn’t one an artist should be too keen to escape. Kristen Ford collaborated with DiFranco and had her as producer on her debut solo album, which will also come out on the godmother of indie-folk’s label Righteous Babe Records this year. She’s no copycat or clone, but it is fair to say fans of Ani’s will almost certainly enjoy Ford’s protest music played by a biracial, queer woman who wears her identities with stubborn strength and pride. She shreds on multiple instruments, and her lyrics reflect poetically on the current dystopia from her unique perspective.
