Born in Queens, Lenny White grew up fascinated by jazz music. After teaching himself the drums, he started playing with local jazz bands at clubs like Slugs’ Saloon and, fortuitously, the Gold Lounge. There, he had his first gig with saxophonist Jackie McLean, which led to working with Miles Davis on Bitches Brew. Musical reputation cemented, White wasn’t one to rest on his laurels. Instead, he joined Chick Corea’s band Return to Forever and helped pioneer the jazz fusion genre. In the process, White has won three Grammy Awards, another two Grammy Award nominations, and the best song winner at the 2023 Cannes Film Festival. Though he’s already six decades into his career, White shows no sign of slowing.
