Painter and sculptor Livien Yin draws upon their Chinese heritage to create artistic works that honor and celebrate “paper sons and daughters,” Chinese immigrants circa 1882-1943. Many of those immigrants made use of forged documents to gain entry into the US, claiming birthright citizenship. Against the backdrop of a presidential election in which one of the candidates promises to do away with birthright citizenship, Yin’s historically rooted work takes on even greater meaning. The artist’s work is part of permanent collections in New York City, Miami and Brazil and has been part of numerous group exhibitions worldwide.
