.Looking Beyond Exhibit

Iranian artist Hadi Aghaee combines surrealist imagery with political commentary in mesmerizing paintings. In one, angels fly with chainsaws toward towering trees growing out of a human heart. In another, a statuesque woman holding symbols representing gender stands before a jeering crowd. Dreamlike and colorful, these images never explain themselves outright, but they provide enough clues to guide a wide audience toward their urgent messages. Aghaee states an artistic obligation to deliver “thought-provoking and engaging messages as a platform to raise awareness about social issues.” Looking Beyond Ourselves closes Sunday.
