Up-and-comer Luciane Dom blends Afrobeat, urban jazz and Latin for a powerful sound representing her roots in Rio de Janeiro—so much so that she was voted Rising Star of the Year at the African Entertainment Awards. Her music connects feminism, Black diaspora and empowerment in a contemporary way that connects her and her listeners to the ghosts of those who came before and paved the way for Dom’s music. Her voice is welcoming yet commanding, inviting the listener in before delivering confident truths that won’t be ignored. She also gets the people on their feet, dancing and enjoying themselves, which is part of her magic.
