Luna Mexicana, a ballet as colorful as the changing leaves, returns to the stage this fall. The annual Oakland Ballet Company Día de los Muertos extravaganza gets more elaborate by the year, including live mariachi music by Mariachi Mexicanisimo, choreography by Martín Romero of Ballet Folklórico México Danza and the return of a segment inspired by Frida Kahlo called “Viva la Vida.” It’s a kaleidoscopic celebration of one of the Latinx community’s most cherished holidays—a night during which families leave food and flowers out for loved ones they’ve lost. Luna Mexicana adds a visual feast to the offerings.
