A frothy blend of Stereolab, the Brian Jonestown Massacre, and Slowdive is the project formerly known as the solo act Madxsen. Now a four-piece that includes Madysen Moreno, Dino Bevilacqua, Charlie Barber and Mateus Gracias, Madxsen weaves well-crafted music dotted with stellar craftsmanship bordering on pop forms but stays true to itself. Hints of Smithsesque melancholia and early ’00s electro-dance make Madxsen an earworm factory. While filled with contrast and surprises, the vast range of music written and performed by Madxsen is not pretentious or trying to be everything at once, nor is it trying to be something that it’s not. It’s a musical landscape where everyone can find fruit to savor. (TMM)
