.Mahler’s Resurrection Symphony in San Mateo

Known as the Resurrection Symphony, Gustav Mahler’s Symphony No. 2 is one of his more popular works, one beloved by music fans since first performed in 1895. He wrote the first movement in 1888 as a symphonic poem but wouldn’t put the final touches on the piece until 1894. With its flowing contrasts between light, airy movements and thunderous ensembles, it is recognized as the first of Mahler’s symphonies to explore his thoughts on life after death. In 2016, it was voted the fifth-greatest symphony of all time by BBC Music Magazine’s survey of conductors, and the original manuscript sold that same year at Sotheby’s London for the equivalent of $5.6 million, the highest price ever for a musical manuscript.
