Woman Warriors — MUSIC ENSAMBLE Mariachi Divas de Cindy Shea and ELLAS team up to form a powerful group.

Two renowned groups of mariachi women join forces this spring on tour as the Mariachi Women Warriors. The Grammy-winning Mariachi Divas de Cindy Shea, a prolific ensemble formed in 1999, and ELLAS, a trio of women who fuse traditional style with contemporary influences (as on their 2020 Beyoncé cover “Irreemplazable”), create an unforgettable mix of tradition and innovation. Stars of the male-dominated world of mariachi, these musicians celebrate not only their Mexican cultural heritage, but also the message of female empowerment through the arts and beyond.

Addie Mahmassani is a poet based in Santa Cruz. She holds a PhD in American Studies from Rutgers University-Newark and is currently an MFA student in creative writing at San Jose State University. There, she is a Teaching Associate as well as the lead poetry editor of Reed Magazine, California's oldest literary journal. She also surfs, sings and loves a part-sheepdog named Lou.
