You’ve heard of Chuck Berry, Little Richard and Elvis, but if you’re not a student of early rock & roll, you may not know much about Sister Rosetta Tharpe. A generation older than those landmark names, Tharpe was a critical influence on all of them, and to the development of the electric guitar. Playwright George Brant explores the life and music of this gospel and blues icon in this stage musical, which was developed at TheatreWorks Silicon Valley’s annual New Works Festival in 2015 and debuted off-Broadway in 2016. It makes its West Coast premiere in Palo Alto this week and runs through Mar. 31.
