According to the Global Child Prodigy Awards, one in ten million children are prodigies. Most people probably will never meet one, let alone be in the same room. But this Sunday will be an exception to the rule when the first and only professional female Portuguese guitarist to play in fado, Marta Pereira da Costa, performs. At 41, she’s lived an incredible life. Born in Lisbon, at the age of four, she learned how to play the piano; by eight, she had already moved on to classical guitar. When she turned 18, she studied Portuguese guitar under one of the world’s most influential Portuguese guitar players, Carlos Gonçalves. It’s no wonder they call her the “Queen of the Portuguese Guitar.”
