Matamoska! is one of the OG bands to come out of LA’s “ghetto ska punk” scene, playing shows as far back as 2001, delivering ska’s message of unity, inclusion and rebellion against the current status quo through catchy riffs and plenty of horns. Longtime saxophonist Jovan Loera was picked up and detained by ICE officials in November, despite Loera having lived in the country for over 20 years, being employed and having filed the “proper” paperwork to become a citizen. This is the weekend to fight fascism, support Loera’s struggle (and GoFundMe), and see why now, more than ever, the scene needs to rally in defense of ska’s most vulnerable musicians.
