By now, San Francisco-based singer/songwriter Meklit has clearly put her own stamp on jazz and neo-soul music, incorporating Ethio-jazz rhythms, instrumentation and harmonic ideas into the mix. For her show MOVEMENT Live, Meklit blends this already potent musical synthesis with a swath of media forms including first-person storytelling, visual and performance art, all to better illustrate the global migrant and refugee experience. The show evolved out of an appearance Meklit made on PRX program The World in 2021. Now, MOVEMENT Live is a bona fide experience that changes with each performance.
