Metallingus never wants anyone to leave the show thinking they’ve been made fun of or they’re the butt of the joke, especially when the band used come out on stage wearing spandex and leather.
“Chris would come out wearing all S&M gear, with a cod piece and nipple clamps, and got whipped during his guitar solo by two girls dressed in bondage leather while the rest of us are baptizing people,” says Joe.
“Now they’re going to heaven and they don’t have a choice,” Rocci says with a grin.
Joe once made a suit out of corn husks, calling himself Cornman.
“It worked for about three minutes until I started sweating bullets and corn starting falling everywhere.”
They had an old friend show up in a suit of armor for a show, holding an axe and standing completely still in the middle of the stage for their entire set. Another favorite prank was having a drum roadie tie a piece fishing line to a cymbal stand, then continuously pull it down and set it back up.
“This started out as a joke band, and still is. The fact that we’ve opened up for serious acts, like Forbidden, is funny. And we’re still laughing about it,” says Joe.
Metallingus plays the Caravan in San Jose on Friday, Feb. 17; 9pm, free.
