CLASSICAL FIZZ: The Poulenc Trio add a dollop of jazzy sophistication to their programs.

Poulenc Trio

By Michael S. Gant

PAYING HOMAGE to the French bad-boy composer, the Poulenc Trio—bassoonist Bryan Young, pianist Irina Lande and oboist Vladimir Lande—evince a breezy approach to the classical repertorie. The group's rendition of Andre Previn's Trio III is full of bright, quick thrusts with an air of devil-may-care jazzy sophistication from '20s Paris. For this performance hosted by the San Jose Chamber Music Society, the trio will perform a Handel Trio Sonata, Rimsky-Korsakov's Dance of the Tumblers, a trio by Poulenc himself and works by Rossini, Glinka and Françaix, as well as the "Jaunty" movement from the Previn trio.

THE POULENC TRIO performs Sunday (Jan. 18) at 7pm at Le Petit Trianon, 72 N. Fifth St., San Jose. Tickets are $25–$40. (408.286.5111)
