Supercop Ultimate Edition

Two discs; Dragon Dynasty/Weinstein Company; $24.99

Reviewed by Richard von Busack

The perfect anecdote for lingering disappointment with Quantum of Solace. One of Jackie Chan's last really serious actioners, Supercop (made in 1992 and originally titled Police Story 3) climaxes with our copper hero keelhauled by helicopter around the skyscrapers and minarets of Kuala Lumpur. Chan teams up with a People's Republic police officer (Michelle Khan, a.k.a. Michelle Yeoh) to go after a Malaysian drug lord. Maggie Cheung plays May, the girl he leaves behind; she suspects something fishy when she sees Chan on stakeout with his partner. Unfortunately, this erstwhile ultimate edition doesn't include a subtitled Hong Kong original; it's, sadly, the same negligently dubbed and rescored version Yanks had to be glad they could get in any form in mainstream theaters during its 1996 release. There is a new Cantonese mono track so the subtitles help. Bey Logan, director of two documentaries on the Great Chan, does a commentary track; extras include interviews with Khan, director Stanley Tong and Ken Lo, Chan's bodyguard.
