WITH the Colts and Bears the last teams standing for Sunday's big game, the Bay Area's two hometown heroes in the playoffs find their Super Bowl hopes dashed. Philadelphia Eagles quarterback Jeff Garcia, from Gilroy by way of San Jose State University, went out in the second round. Then last week, San Mateo native son Tom Brady went down with the Patriots in a heartbreaking loss that saw the Colts come back from 18 down for a game-winning 80-yard drive. However, few doubt he'll be back to press the issue of a fourth Super Bowl ring with New England, which would tie him with Joe Montana. Brady was inspired by Montana's 49ers in the '80s while he was playing at Junipero Serra High School in San Mateo. His amazing career has since landed him a spot in the Junipero Serra High School Hall of Fame next to Barry Bonds and Lynn Swann, two more of the school's athletic prodigies. (He didn't just excel at football—Brady's skills as a catcher made him the 18-round draft pick for the Montreal Expos in 1995.) At 30, Brady's arm still looks strong enough to make Super Bowl XLII.
