LEADER OF THE PACK: Ice Skating superstar Sasha Cohen will be headlining the 2008 season of the Smucker's Stars on Ice tour.
Rink of Fire
By Felipe Buitrago
SAN JOSE is starting to thaw out from its winter hibernation break and is coming back to life with some fancy footwork this month. The Smucker's Stars on Ice tour will be hitting the Pavilion this Sunday with some of the world's most renowned ice skaters. For the past 22 years, the Stars on Ice tour has proven that it consistently betters itself with each passing year. This time around, Olympic Silver Medalist Sasha Cohen will be headlining the Emmy Award–winning performance. She will be accompanied by 1998 Olympic Champion Ilia Kulik from Russio and the 2002 Canadian Olympic Pair Champions Jamie Salé and David Pelletier. Some other newbies to the 2008 Smucker's rink will be three-time World Pair Champions and two-time Olympic Bronze Medalists Xue Shen and Hongbo Zhao from China and two-time World Silver Medalists and five-time Canadian National Dance Champions Marie-France Dubreuil and Patrice Lauzon. But spectators beware; this promises not to be a typical ice skating competition. These performances, which tour through 40 U.S. cities, are "Live and in Color," bringing together the brightest of light spectacles and popular music and, of course, the sharpest of choreographies. Would you expect anything less from Mr. Cutting Edge himself, Olympic Gold Medalist Scott Hamilton? Of course not.
The Smucker's STARS ON ICE tour happens Sunday, Feb. 10, at 6pm at HP Pavilion, 525 W. Santa Clara St., San Jose. Tickets are $25–$110. (408.998.TIXS; www.starsonice.com)
