Wedding Bells

By Michael S Gant

ELIZABETH STEPHENS (left) and Annie Sprinkle (center) hosted an unusual workshop over last weekend at the San Jose Institute of Art. As part of a seven-year performance-art project called the "Love Art Laboratory Bridal Party," Stephens and Sprinkle put together an "art wedding," with a different color scheme each year, and invite the public to help them design and make all the accoutrements. This year's chosen hue is green and inspired a variety of imaginative couture. Ms. Antoinette (left) showed up and helped design a special emerald peacock corset for Annie. The knot gets tied May 17; look for info at www.loveartlab.org.

The workshop is part of an ongoing series of audience-participation events connected to the San Jose Institute of Contemporary Art's current exhibit, "This Show Needs You." This Saturday (April 12), 2–4pm, the gallery offers "How to Pickle Lemons." For an interactive installation called Lemon Everlasting Backyard Battery, artists Ted Purves, Susanne Cockrell and Joseph McHenry have been gathering local lemons (and stories about lemon trees) from home cultivators in the valley and will be preserving and curing them throughout the show. Saturday's session will provide tips on saving real lemons and saving some of the memories that go with them.

THIS SHOW NEEDS YOU runs through May 17 at the San Jose Institute of Contemporary Art, 560 S. First St., San Jose. The museum is open Tuesday–Saturday. (408.483.8155)
