Opera San José The opera brings its season to a close with Mozart's The Magic Flute, a musical fairy tale full of romance, mysticism and some magnificent arias. Rochelle Bard and Khori Dastoor alternate in the role of Pamina, while Isaac Hurtado and Christopher Bengochea do the same for Tamino. April 19–May 4 at the California Theatre, 345 S. Beaux Arts Trio For the final concert of its 2007–08 season, the San Jose Chamber Music Society presents the Beaux Arts Trio—cellist Antonio Meneses, pianist Menahem Pressler and violist Daniel Hope. The distinguished group, which has been making music since the 1950s, will perform Schubert's Trio in B Major and a special commissioned piece by György Kurtag. San Jose Symphonic Choir In a fundraiser for the homeless ministries, the San Jose Symphonic Choir presents the Beatitude Mass by local composer Henry Mollicone. El Camino Youth Symphony Martin Chalifour, the principal concertmaster for the L.A. Philharmonic, joints the symphony for its annual benefit concert. Chalifour will solo on Barber's Violin Concerto. The program also features Tchaikovsky's Symphony no. 6 (Pathetique). Dr. Camilla Kolchinsky conducts. The Cypress String Quartet The local classical ensemble introduces Kurt Rodhe's Gravities, a new work that uses Bartok's Quartet no. 6 and Haydn's String Quartet no. 2 as its jumping-off point. The concert also includes a performance of the Haydn to cement the connection. Rhode, a San Franciscan, will be in attendance and fielding questions about his musical methods.
