Bike to Work Day

By Steve Palopoli

CYCLING is in season and what better way to prove it than getting that steely steed ready for Bike to Work Day on Thursday, May 15. Part of the National Bike to Work week, this day commends those people that pump up their tires and pedal to work and back by inviting them to food and beer at Gordon Biersch at 33 E. San Fernando in San Jose. The Silicon Valley Bike Coalition will also be hosting Energizer Stations throughout Santa Clara County from 6 to 9am that will offer free snacks to keep pedalers going. And there is also fuel for thought-bayareabikes.org has set up a bike calculator that gauges the number of calories burned on any commute, vs. a car's fuel emissions, and how much money is saved by biking. "I find the days I drive, I'm grumpy," says Corinne Winter, executive director of the Silicon Valley Bicycle Coalition. Who wouldn't be grumpy if they knew that the average driver spends $9,641 each year on their car? Or spends too much time trying to find a parking spot? That's just one more problem this year's Bike to Work Day participants are sure to avoid.
