Great Summertime Wines

By Stett Holbrook

WARM WEATHER and long nights call for glasses of light and lively wine to go with the fresh flavors of summer cooking. Here are five wines to help you enjoy the remaining days of summer.

Chablis The real stuff from France offers a taste of what chardonnay tastes like before it's bludgeoned with oak. At its best, chablis has bright acidity and steely, mineral flavors that pair perfectly with fresh fish or cow's milk cheeses.

Lambrusco Frizzante This sparkling red wine from Italy is a real quaffer that goes especially well with salume and cured meats.

Rosé Once tossed into the dustbin of disreputable wines like white zinfandel and Blue Nun, rosé has been rediscovered by winemakers as a great warm-weather, food friendly wine.

Sparkling Wine It's a shame that bubbly is reserved for celebrations and New Year's Eve. The crisp flavors and palate-scrubbing bubbles are perfect for summer dining.

Vinho Verde This low-alcohol while wine from Portugal is cheap, light and easy-drinking—perfect for picnics and alfresco dining.
