San Jose Giants pitcher Alex Hinshaw

You want a pitcher? Not a belly itcher? Done. Alex Hinshaw pitched the San Jose Giants to another win Sunday against the Modesto Nuts.

SJ Giants on Top

By Felipe Buitrago

THE GIANTS swept some Nuts this weekend at the San Jose Municipal Stadium. Even though the Modesto Nuts were first to put the numbers on the board, our local Giants held up and pushed the game to win 5 to 4 in 13 innings.

It was the double by Modesto's Justin Nelson at the top of the second that got him on base, and Doc Brooks was the man who sent him home. But the Giants fired two singles that put Mark Minicozzi and Julio Cordido in the game. William Thompson's double to center field put both runners over home plate. Shortly after, Alex Requena to walked to first. With two men on base Tm Huntington smacked a fly out to right field. Thompson and Requena made a run for it, and scored two more for the Giants. It's now 4-1 at bottom of the second inning.

Five innings later, Modesto got back on track. A double by Kyle Wilson let Doc Brooks score for the Nuts. Then at the top of the ninth, Brooks cracked a line drive, giving second base thief Jonathan Herrera a ticket home to tie the game.

Neither team could get it together until the bottom of inning 13, when the Nuts' pitcher change—Jacob Postlewait replaced Matt Daley—worked more to the Giants advantage. After a bunt that landed Julio Cordido on first, Postlewait intentionally walked Yamid Haad and then unintentionally walked Alex Requena. Now with the bases loaded and no outs, Tim Hutting has enough breathing room to score the single the Giants needed to wrap up the game.

The Giants now are now looking at a secure first place for the season; the Division Finals start on Sept. 9 at San Jose's Municipal Stadium. The last local games will be on Aug. 30 and 31 against the Modesto Nuts, and Monday Sept. 4 against the Stockton Ports.
