WITH MORE THAN 14 albums and a career spanning more than two decades, Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds head over to the Warfield in support of their latest album, Dig!!! Lazarus Dig!!!. The Bad Seeds originally formed in 1984 from the ashes of Cave's old band, the Birthday Party. Famously known for his tongue-in-cheek lyrics about death, violence and all things dark, Cave has established himself as a master of narrative prose. Dig!!! is no exception—it's quite possibly the Seeds' sharpest and wittiest album yet.

The Hives
SWEDISH ROCK QUINTET the Hives came howling onto the scene early in the 21st century, performing a playful form of garage punk alongside a wave of new faces, including the Vines and more indie-fied variations of garage rock such as the Strokes and the White Stripes. Singles "Hate to Say I Told You So" and "Supply and Demand" from their debut album, Veni Vidi Vicious, were well received, but though they amassed a wide following of devout fans, the Hives' subsequent albums, Tyrannosaurus Hives in 2004 and The Black and White Album, didn't make more than a blip on most mainstream radars. The black-and-white-clad chaps continue to present live shows to rave reviews from music magazines including Spin and Rolling Stone, so though they haven't found continuous pop success, the Hives clearly care more about creating and performing fun, quality music than pandering to audiences in order to remain atop the music charts. Monterey Jazz Festival
THE 51ST YEAR of the Monterey Jazz Festival is as ambitious as ever, featuring headliners Cassandra Wilson, the Derek Trucks Band and Herbie Hancock. Spread out over the course of three days, the festival offers an array of things to do, with multiple stages of music, exhibitions of art, panel discussions and even plenty of shopping. But as usual the emphasis is on the music; other performers include the Joshua Redman Trio, Maceo Parker, Jamie Cullum, Christian McBride, the Wayne Shorter Quartet, Kurt Elling and Ledisi.
