DJ Basura

By Colleen Watson

THE SOUTH BAY boasts a lot of good DJs. I've mentioned a few in previous months and I will mention more later. One of the South Bay's gems is DJ Basura, also known as Michael Boada, whom you can find weekly at the Blank Club on Thursday nights for its '80s indie-rock night. He also spices up Motif's Workout Party monthly."I kind of see myself as a big fish in a small pond," said Boada. "The scene is burgeoning, but there's not many people doing it."

Boada has been a DJ for more than 10 years. "Well, when I was in the sixth grade, I would go to gigs with a cousin who would DJ house parties and school dances and weddings, and I would tag along with him."

Currently, Boada is working on some of his own tracks and remixes. "Also, I've been helping out more in the booking process at the Blank Club and am looking forward to bringing more awesome indie and electronic bands to San Jose in the future. Some upcoming DJ sets include opening for Passion Pit and the Bravery at the Blank Club this week."

He continues, "I think the best thing about being a DJ in a dance club is having the crowd under your spell and having the power and ability to control their mood. On the other end of the spectrum, outside of the club scene, for instance, when I DJ at art shows or nondance nights, I enjoy the idea of having more freedom to play what I want and introducing people to stuff that I'm into. It's more personal."

Besides being a DJ, Boada also works at Streetlight Records, contributes to the music blog www.missingtoof.com and is the proud father of a shiny new 6-month-old baby.
