IRISH PUNK

The Pogues

BACK IN the early '80s, when the Pogues first caught people's attention with their booze-drenched Irish-folk-meets-punk-rock-music, the reactions were mixed. After all, there weren't many bands like them (if any), and their raucous live performances could turn peaceful bars into chaotic war-zones. But the wild nature of the group was enough to catch the attention of the Clash, who chose them to open for them on their 1984 tour. Soon after, the Pogues amassed a loyal fan base smitten on good whiskey and rowdy drinking tunes. Moreover, the band seems responsible for an entire folk-punk movement, inspiring bands like Flogging Molly to take a double shot at the big time. Catch the London legends at one of their four gigs this week at the Fillmore in San Francisco.

Dynamic Duo

Jennifer Lopez & Marc Anthony

2007 will be a year to remember in the careers of Jennifer Lopez and Marc Anthony as the husband-and-wife team produced their own films, recordings and concerts, showcasing their own inimitable Bronx-born artistic styles. Latin New York's first couple stop in at the HP Pavilion on their first tour together. Anthony will open the show, and word has it he is singing a salsa-heavy set with tunes from the film El Cantante. With rumors that she is pregnant, J-Lo is apparently taking it easy on the dance numbers and letting her voice do the work. This year Lopez has released two albums that showcase her thin but emotionally packed pipes. Como Ama Una Mujer was her first Spanish-language album and showed a softer side of Lopez. Brave was just released Oct. 9 and stays in line with her past Jenny From the Block dance records with an R&B and hip-hop thrust. While El Cantante may have flopped as a film, but it didn't lessen Anthony's or Lopez's reputations as artists with fans who are making this tour one of the most attended Latin pop performances of the year.

EL POETA DEL PUEBLO

Joan Sebastian

KNOWN IN Mexico as "El Poeta del Pueblo" (the People's Poet), Joan Sebastian is the original Kelly Clarkson, except he's from Mexico and his success came over 30 years ago. What, then, could he possibly have in common with the American Idol star? Long before Paula and Simon were arguing over performance scores, Mexico ran a similar TV show in which contestants were judged before a live audience. Despite receiving criticism from the judging panel, Sebastian won over the crowd and went on to become one of the most successful Latin songwriters in history. His career earned him three Grammys, five Latin Grammys and numerous Top 40 hits both in the States and in Mexico. After overcoming cancer in 1999, Joan Sebastian still produces the kind of pop songs that would make anyone an idol.

Maroon 5

THIS LOVE: Grammy Award-winning Maroon 5 is back in action after a hiatus that followed their 2002 Songs About Jane album. Maroon 5's new material has been blowing fans and critics away--it's sexier and better than ever. The music world has seen tons of artists infusing soul into their music, but Maroon 5 excels at it, making them heartthrobs for many adoring female fans. Funky beats and Adam Levine's unique vocals are still what set Maroon 5 apart from other alternative rock bands. The HP Pavilion might be a huge venue, but Maroon 5, The Hives and Phantom Planet will undoubtedly fill it up with fans and beautiful music.
