Valley of the Heart's Delight

By Richard von Busack

(Unrated; 100 min.) John D. Murphy and Tim Boxell's fictionalized version of San Jose's moment of eternal infamy: the 1933 lynchings in St. James Park. Peter Postlethwaite (Distant Voices, Still Lives) is extremely good as a right-wing newspaper editor who first covers up and then foments the atrocity. The love story is less compelling and the two victims—innocents in this version—hardly get any screen time. Still, the recreation of the big event is sharply done, and on a low budget, too.
