Barley Wines

By Stett Holbrook

Barley wine is an old-style brew with big, aromatic flavors, malty character and high alcohol levels. These beers are rich and viscous with toasty caramel flavors that make for delicious cold-weather sipping. Like ports and sherries, they're best savored after a meal and develop deeper flavors with age. Here are five worth seeking out.

Old Foghorn Barleywine Style Ale. A classic from San Francisco's Anchor Brewing Co.

Olde GnarlyWine style ale. Made by the Lagunitas Brewing Co.

John Barleycorn barleywine style ale. The Mad River Brewing Co. brews this one.

Old Crustacean barleywine. Rogue Ales.

Bigfoot barleywine style ale. A good one from Sierra Nevada Brewing Co.
