THE SOUTH BAY seems to be getting more and more places to listen to good music. They are sprouting up in little corners where you don't expect them. One newer venue that is trying to bring good blues to San Jose is Poor House Bistro. This New Orleans restaurant can be found near the downtown train station.
Nestled in a cute little converted house, Poor House Bistro offers spicy food and good music. The music can be found in the patio outside, although you can enjoy it from within the confines of the restaurant as well. When I was there, Ron Thompson, dressed all in black except for a white fedora and white loafers, was crooning away. He played the guitar while next to him another weathered older man played the drums. It definitely added to the whole New Orleans experience. I chomped away on popcorn shrimp and a New Orleans beer while enjoying the blues coming from the patio. It made for an awesome Wednesday night.
The patio comes equipped with heaters, so even though the weather is starting to cool down you can still enjoy the entertainment. The bistro offers live bands Wednesdays through Saturdays. Singer/songwriter Jeffrey Halford stops by this Friday with his band the Healers.
