.Mike Campbell Carries on Without Tom Petty

Mike Campbell began playing with Tom Petty when both still lived in swampy, slow-paced Gainesville, Florida. As an original member of the Heartbreakers, he would go on to co-write some of the most beloved rock songs ever, including “Refugee” and “Here Comes My Girl.” The shock of Petty’s untimely death in 2017 set his bandmates on heart-wrenching journeys, which, for Campbell, led to releasing two albums with his long-time sideband The Dirty Knobs. He explains, “It’s rougher-edged [than Petty’s material]. It’s slightly over-driven, less polished, lots of Sixties influence: The Kinks, Led Zeppelin, The Animals.”
