Our Bodies Through Our Eyes, curated by Qualia Gallery cofounder Dacia Xu, exhibits seven women artists using portraiture as a tool of resistance, reclamation and healing. Featured artwork ranges from Huang Hairong’s photo-realistic paintings to flamboyant fairy-tale settings by Wang You; Gina Contreras’s intimate self-portraits to distorted still lifes by Annie Duncan; and Ren Light Pan’s experimental ink portraits of trans bodies to sculptural paintings by Stella Zhang. Also showcased are oil and mixed-media paintings by the late artist Hung Liu, offering lush reinterpretations of documentary photographs of Chinese women from different periods. The two-month-long exhibition concludes this Saturday.
