Insolence took a break from the studio to play the Cactus Club. Hometown Proud Insolence played a generous set to an enthusiastic San Jose audience By Sarah Quelland FANS OF INSOLENCE were camped outside the CACTUS CLUB long before the band was slated to hit the stage at the anticipated afterparty following NEW SKOOL TATTOO'S Suits Made to Fit exhibit reception at the WORKS/SAN JOSE. When the doors opened Friday night (Jan. 4), people piled inside the club and headed for the front of the stage. Not ones to disappoint, Insolence put on a powerful performance energized by songs from Revolution, including "Death Threat," "Poison Well," "Natural High," "Revolution," "1-2, 1-2" and "Sick." The band also revived an old Insolence classic, "Front" (from 1997's Within), which it reserves almost exclusively for San Jose audiences. It also tried out a couple of new songs, including one it first debuted at the LIVE 105 Halloween Freak Show at Shoreline Amphitheatre titled "Operation Irie." The crowd was pumped up, stage-diving and screaming along word for word with vocalists BILLY "MECH 1" ROSENTHAL and MARK HERMAN, as the band played an extremely generous set for its hometown crowd. Insolence is currently working on material for its next record. ALL THE NEWS: The scene suffered a terrible loss early last Saturday (Jan. 5) when the multitalented guitarist, bassist, drummer, keyboardist and vocalist ROB LUMBRE, known for his work with local metal bands SEVERED SAVIOR, OSMIUM, PSYPHERIA and MUCUS MEMBRANE, was killed in an automobile accident. Friends and fans are posting testimonials to the late musician and condolences to his family in the Dreambook on his own personal webspace (www.mindspring.com/~rlumbre) and on Osmium's message board at www.internaltorment.com. Osmium had a show scheduled for Jan. 13 at the CACTUS CLUB which may turn into a memorial show for Lumbre. The band is also asking for donations for Lumbre's family to help with funeral costs. ... The future looks grim for the GASLIGHTER THEATER in Campbell. The theater and all-ages concert venue has been seeking contributions from the community in an attempt to raise the $30,000 necessary to remain open. If it did not meet its goal by Jan. 9 (after our deadline), it will reportedly shut its doors. Visit www.gaslighter.com for updates. ... The RUSH CYBERCAFE is also turning to the community for assistance by holding a $40 per ticket drawing with prizes ranging from Rush merch to gift certificates to an Italian scooter. The club has announced that due to a lack of support for its live shows, it will switch its format to all DJ music. It seems like so much of this could be avoided--or at least postponed--if these and other businesses would learn how to increase their visibility and promote themselves properly. ...
