Cactus Club Hit Thieves struck the SoFA club after Saturday's closing By Sarah Quelland WHETHER DUE TO THE LULL in the winter rains, the three-day weekend or the promising bands lined up for the night, people turned out in large numbers Saturday (Jan. 13) to catch Major Liegue, Setacide, Willie's Conception and others at the Cactus Club, and Downside, Fuse, Divided (formerly Drift) and Krenshaw at the Usual. But the night turned sour some time after 3am, when the Cactus Club was reportedly robbed. The police have been notified in an attempt to catch the crooks who allegedly made off with lots of cash, quarters from the video game and pinball machines, power tools and other items. The Cactus Club's Calvin Trippett says they took "pretty much everything that wasn't nailed down." Luckily no one was hurt in the incident since everyone had left for the night and no severe damage was done to the club. There were no suspects by deadline. Business at the Cactus Club will continue as usual. This was one of Krenshaw's last scheduled shows for a while. The band is finishing production on its forthcoming full-length album, said to be titled Lazy I. Setacide, former Salmon drummer Pat Ruiz's new band, has another show lined up Feb. 1 at the Cactus supporting Slightly Stoopid, Sprung Monkey and the Brownies. The club will be airing a snow-boarding movie, and T-shirts will be given away. Sloe has signed on with Santa Cruz's Sessions Records for the official release of its Inexact Replica CD. The band will perform tonight (Jan. 18) at the Caravan with Veeda and again Saturday (Jan. 20) at 6:30pm with Keeping Ellis and Fighting Jacks at the Plant in the South Hills Community Church at 6601 Camden Ave. in San Jose. ... Stunt Monkey is playing the Cover to Cover Benefit to Save Local Music Friday (Jan. 19) at Slim's in San Francisco with Pansy Division, Vegas DeMilo and other regional bands. Doors for this all-ages show open at 7pm, and the bands start around 8pm. ... Great Bear Coffee in Los Gatos is going to start doing bigger live music showcases. Next Thursday (Jan. 25), Xiu Xiu and the Good Gins will perform at 7pm. The show is free, but donations are appreciated. ... KFJC-FM (89.7) is holding a memorial show for Ken Hamilton on March 4 at the Justice League in San Francisco. Tickets for Burning Man go on sale Saturday (Jan. 20). The theme for this year's event (Aug. 27-Sept. 3) at Black Rock City, Nev., is the Seven Ages. Tickets are available at varying costs at varying intervals leading up to the participants-only art gathering. Early prices range from $125 to $185. Mail orders will end July 31. Channel 104.9-FM has changed its format from "Music for the Rest of Us" to "The New Music Alternative." The station will be playing more modern music, comparable to LIVE 105 (KITS FM-105.3).
