A LOT OF MOVIES treat food as a prop, but here are five where food plays a more central, if not starring, role.
Dinner Rush: A crime drama set inside a busy Manhattan restaurant that offers an authentic peak behind the kitchen door. The only unbelievable part is Sandra Bernhard in the role of a restaurant critic.
Like Water for Chocolate: This one's pretty obvious, but it's a beautiful testament to the seductive power of food, especially really food Mexican food.
Mostly Martha: This German film isn't about Martha Stewart but about an uptight chef who learns to lighten up and enjoy life as well as a good plate of pasta.
Napoleon Dynamite: Hannah Arendt wrote about the "banality of evil," and this excellent movie depicts, among other things, the banality of food. Tater tots, tuna casseroles, chimichangas and gristly steaks play friggin' sweet roles. Don't miss the food-centric opening credits.
Tampopo: If you haven't seen this classic Japanese film, you don't know about the beauty and art of a good bowl of ramen. Highly recommended.
