Statistics address the who, what and why not of gambling

  • 63 percent of Americans approve of legalized gambling.

  • 29 percent of adults say that gambling should be reduced or banned altogether.

  • 22 percent of Americans say that legalized gambling should be expanded.

  • 49 percent of those who have gambled within the last 12 months admit to losing money.

  • 75 percent of adults disapprove of online gambling.

  • Between 1994 and 2000, the number of gambling trips by Americans has increased 20 percent.

  • In 1998, of the nearly 15,000 individuals employed by Indian casinos only 10 percent were Native American.

  • The FBI estimates that in excess of $2.5 billion is wagered on the NCAA Tournament each year.

  • Suicide rates are 200 times higher than the national average for compulsive gamblers and 150 times higher for their spouses.
