Donnas turn 21 with feisty new album
By Sarah Quelland
IMAGINE AN ALBUM that combines the perkiness of the Go-Gos, the ballsy attitude of Joan Jett and the trashy sleaze of the cock rockers of the mid- to late-'80s. Then add a pinch of Ramones-styled punk, and you'll have a feel for the Donnas' latest, The Donnas Turn 21. The new album is jam-packed with fun, feisty songs about making out, getting drunk, breaking hearts and living life on the road--and it's their best yet. The audacious Palo Alto four-piece doesn't pull any punches. From the opening track, "Are You Gonna Move It for Me?" ("You wanna meet me, but you wrote a bad review of our show/If you don't like us, what are you doing standing in the front row?"), these girls sound all grown up. They get catty on "Hot Pants" ("Well, you've got the moves, but your hair is so last year"); flirty on "Play My Game" ("I'll let you flip my flipper if you let me unzip your zipper"); and show a sense of humor on "40 Boys in 40 Nights" ("Makin' out all night in Hollywood, you know I'd do 'em all if I could"). The new album is girlish without being weak, and the sassy collective displays confidence and maturity.
