5 Places for Crab Cakes

FEBRUARY is crab month, and it's hard to beat fresh-cracked Dungeness crab. But it's labor intensive to get to all that sweet, rich meat. Crab cakes, on the other hand, take the work out of enjoying the crustaceans. The five restaurants below take crab cakes to new heights.

Birk's: Birk's pairs its cakes with a tropical fruit sauce and micro greens. 3955 Freedom Circle, Santa Clara. 408.980.6400.

California Cafe: The standard bearer of California cuisine serves crab cakes with an almond cole slaw, remoulade and orange marmalade. 50 University Dr., Suite 260, Los Gatos. 408.354.8118.

Paragon Restaurant and Bar: Look for spicy crab cakes served alongside a champagne vinaigrette and a watercress, fennel and citrus salad. 211 S. First St., San Jose. 408.298.8888.

Parcel 104: Parcel 104 has two crab cake options: A crab cake club sandwich with smoked chile aioli and hickory bacon and crab cakes with organic local pear slaw and tangerine curd. 2700 Mission College Blvd., Santa Clara. 408.970.6104.

Yankee Pier: The Santana Row restaurant is serving its cakes with a baby spinach salad with bacon and red onion in an orange vinaigrette. 378 Santana Row, Suite 1100, San Jose. 408.244.1244.
