One Thing at a Time
Helping the community may sound like a great idea, but a six-hour weekly volunteer job just isn't feasible for most of us. However, don't cast that altruistic urge aside--there are some organizations designed to help the busy-but-civic-minded.
A prospective volunteer can register with the Volunteer Exchange of Santa Clara County--via phone or the Web (the Web site also offers listings of one-time opportunities)--and the Exchange will provide a list that best suits his or her schedule and interests.
Call 408/247-1126--or 650/965-2426 on the Peninsula and 408/683-9061 in the South County.
Another organization, Community Impact, focuses on one-day service events that range from building park trails to sorting food at food banks.
Generally, projects are organized each week on evenings and weekends. Call 650/965-0242.
