Expert advice--The earlier you book, the more likely you'll be to get the DJ, clown or band you really want. But according to Read Zaro, president of the Willow Glen-based Entertainment Connection, "there's usually someone available somewhere."

"If you're not able to plan early," Zaro says, "and you come to us and describe what you like about an act, we can usually find you something similar."

But what if there simply are no string quartets available for next weekend?

"There's always alternatives," Zaro says. "We'll look for a harp and a flute. Ninety-eight percent of the time, we can come up with who you need."

DIY--Surely you know people. Your cousin who sang a solo with his church choir would be perfect to warble "The Wedding Song." And isn't your best friend's sister in that local Irish dance group? And if you can't book a DJ, just glom on to a guest who you know loves both music and control and so would be happy to take charge of the turntable. Usually, people with so-called hidden talents like these are just dying for opportunities to move out from under a bushel and into the light.
