Couples Resource Center--3872 Duncan Place, Palo Alto, 94306 (650/494-6402). Communication skills and relationship dynamics are the focus of classes and groups.

Process Therapy Institute--16573 Los Gatos-Almaden Road, Los Gatos, 95032 (408/358-2218). Classes and support groups specialize in marriage communication skills.

YMCA--San Jose: 1717 The Alameda, 95126 (408/298-1717); Peninsula: 2400 Grant Road, Mt. View, 94040 (650/969-9622); and Santa Clara County: 375 S. Third St., San Jose, 95112 (408/295-4011). Child-care programs, family fitness and recreation, group classes at affordable rates.

Parent Information and Referral Center--650/498-KIDS or 800/690-2282. This number connects parents with professionals at Lucile Salter Packard Children's Hospital at Stanford, to answer questions on child rearing and medical, nutritional or behavioral concerns.

La Leche League of Northern California--408/264-0994 and 650/873-6525. Breastfeeding information and support.

Trustline--800/822-8490. Parents can check the background of unlicensed babysitters, nannies or au pairs.

Community Coordinated Child Development Council-- 798 N. First St., San Jose, 95112 (408/998-4900). Resource and referral agency.

Child Care Aware--800/424-2246. Links parents with resources in their area.

Santa Clara County Office of Education--1290 Ridder Park Dr, San Jose, 95131 (408/453-6500).

Centre for Living With Dying--554 Mansion Park Dr, Santa Clara, 95051 (408/980-9801). Emotional support includes grief counseling and Healing Heart, a program for children who have lost a loved one or are seriously ill themselves.

Twenty-Four-Seven Teen Line--888/247-7717. Staffed 24 hours a day, seven days a week. A call to this number will plug youth into more than two dozen agencies to deal with health, relationship, substance abuse or family problems.

Bill Wilson Center--3490 The Alameda, Santa Clara, 95050 (408/243-0222). Independent, multilingual youth shelter for ages 11-17. Sliding-fee services include family and individual counseling, drug/alcohol counseling, gender identity counseling, single-parent support groups, grandparent support groups and group home for teen-parent families.

Family Services Association of Santa Clara Valley--55 E. Empire St, San Jose, 95112 (408/288-6200). Programs include mobile crisis services for intervention for children ages 11-17 and their families.
