Body & Soul

[whitespace] Free Pool

Shooting stick in a room full of snot-nosed poseurs is lame, not to mention expensive. But there is another way: senior centers, where the seasoned hustlers spend their golden years playing pool, ping-pong and poker. But this is a delicate one. Most senior centers won't allow whippersnappers to partake.

Hear firsthand about the war in the Pacific, the Great Depression or Prohibition; get some learned advice on school or your love life. But wait, what about pool?

After you've made friends, you'll be welcome to the table on slow days. If management gets wise, just say you're there to watch and learn. Senior centers with tables include the St. James and Willows centers in San Jose, and senior centers in Santa Clara, Mountain View and Palo Alto.
