Mass Transit and Ride-Shares
Every couple needs a weekend of chintz every once in a while. Use the opportunity to enjoy the scenery and support an aging infrastructure. Greyhound and AMTRAK will spirit you out of your mundane Silicon Valley life and transport you to Nevada's second gaming mecca. Catch a train in Diridon Station and spend a day crossing the verdant Central Valley, climbing through the snowcapped Sierra and visiting the bar in the café car. The train arrives in Reno at 4:30 p.m. Tickets run $77 each way depending on availability. The cheaper, albeit less scenic, alternative is Greyhound, which leaves Almaden Station in San Jose at 3:10 p.m. Friday and arrives in Reno at 10 p.m. The round-trip fare is $60, and if you can plan at least three days in advance, companions travel free.
