Shoreline Amphitheatre, 1 Amphitheatre Parkway, Mountain View. 650.967.3000 Current Album: A Rush of Blood to the Head (2002, Capitol) Vitals: Moody Britpop that's equal parts British and popular Breakthrough: "Yellow" (2000) Current Single: "Clocks" (2003) Scouting Report: Forget the tabloid reports about vocalist/pianist Chris Martin's relations with an Academy Award-winning thespian (hint: first name Gwyneth, last name Paltrow); it's the singles that keep Coldplay firmly in the spotlight. The miniepic "Yellow" and its dramatic video opened the door for the quartet, and the more reflective follow-up, "Trouble," kept the one-hit-wonder label from being applicable. Coldplay went on to avoid the sophomore slump curse with another pair of hits: the expansive "In My Place" (which, frankly, dances around a hook but never seems to find one) and the piano-driven "Clocks." The quartet's flair for bombast was revealed on Grammy night when it performed "Politik" with Michael Kamen conducting the New York Philharmonic behind them. Not as experimental as Radiohead, somewhat tougher than Travis and definitely not hooligans like Oasis, Coldplay is a middle-of-the-road British group that everyone can dig--the definition of family fun for all.
