Date: March 24, 7 and 9pm. Sold out. Kuumbwa Jazz Center, 320-2 Cedar St., Santa Cruz. 831.427.2227

Support: None

Current Album: Future 2 Future (2002, Transparent)

Vitals: Whether in the realm of acoustic jazz, R&B or experimental electronic, Herbie is the man, period.

Breakthrough: Headhunters (1974)

Current Single: "The Essence" remixes (2002)

Scouting Report: In the past few years, Hancock has played the Bay Area in a duo concert with fellow titan and "second great" Miles Davis Quintet alumnus Wayne Shorter; with his own 21st Century acoustic-electric combo; and in an all-star quintet with saxophonist Michael Brecker and trumpeter Roy Hargrove on the front line. Hancock shines equally in minimal and maxed-out sonic settings and should be equally at home leading his own quartet. Playing in his band are three other stars--saxophonist Gary Thomas (Davis, Jack DeJohnette), bassist Scott Colley (Jim Hall, Andrew Hill) and drummer Teri Lynn Carrington (Shorter, The Arsenio Hall Show band)--who are equally at home in traditional and modern settings and should match their leader's intensity, integrity and inspiration.
