Scouting Report: Along with Elvis Costello and Joe Strummer, Joe Jackson was one of England's original Angry Young Men when he debuted in 1979. For much of his career, Jackson has prided himself on his musical veracity, playing punk rock, pop, jump swing, adult contemporary, urban pop and even symphonic suites. His albums have explored life's continuous transitions, and his latest crisis is dealt with in atypical fashion: go back and recapture the intensity. Jackson's new album, Vol. 4, marks the reunion of the original Look Sharp!-era Joe Jackson Band with Graham Maby, Dave Houghton and Gary Sanford. The new album was recorded in 10 days with minimal overdubs and no studio wizardry. On this tour, he's dusting of the punk-pop nuggets like "On Your Radio," "Look Sharp," "Is She Really Going Out With Him?" and "Got the Time"--and playing them with their 1979-1982 structure and ferocity. The old-school pogoers should stock up on Tiger Balm. (TI)
