Scouting Report: Dave Eggers, author of A Heartbreaking Work of Staggering Genius, is also behind McSweeney's, a publishing house and quarterly literary journal. And not just any literary journal; Eggers champions unknown writers as well as big-timers like Nick Hornby, Michael Crichton and Stephen King. For McSweeney's No. 6, Eggers commissioned quirky rock band They Might Be Giants to "score" the issue--that is, to write songs to accompany the written words within. The accompanying CD features 45 songs, with guests like M. Doughty of Soul Coughing and Philip Glass, and songs ranging from eight seconds to three minutes. In the best circus tradition, Eggers and the Giants take this freak show on the road. The show will feature spoken-word, music and a special performance by the Trachtenburg Family Slideshow Players. Previous performances have included guest authors, a hobo and TMBG doing "We Are the World." This is going to be one of the coolest, nerdiest afternoons one will experience this year. (TI)
