Supportive Scene South Bay music community grieves together after losing one of its own By Sarah Quelland IT'S AMAZING how many lives one person can touch. On Tuesday (Feb. 27), those close to the late "Rockin' Rob" Dapello gathered at the Cactus Club to celebrate his life and mourn his untimely death. Dapello seemed to live and breathe music and was one of this area's biggest supporters of local bands. He himself was in the band Uncle Lucifer and frequently wrote for Zero Magazine. On Feb. 24, the 33-year-old suffered a fatal brain aneurysm while attending a show at the Cactus Club. It's fitting that the club was filled to capacity on Tuesday. On this night of healing and bittersweet remembrances, people shared stories and traded memories about Dapello. Early in the evening, the mood was extremely somber as members of this area's music community looked to each other for strength. The music of some of Dapello's favorite bands played overhead, and flowers and photos served as a makeshift shrine. The official farewell concert will be held March 18, 3-11pm, at the Cactus Club. Proceeds are slated for a posthumous release of material Dapello recorded during his life. The remaining members of Uncle Lucifer will go on that night as a three-piece, and original members of True to Form, Not Hot, Caustic Notions and Slick 50 will reunite just to perform at this memorial show. Pimp Sticks (featuring Dave Baisa, Joey Meyers and Mike Bellardes), the Secrets (featuring Damien Zubrod and Sean Packer), BB Gun Suicide (featuring Loren Fergusen) and What Four (featuring Greg Orpeza, Joey Meyers and Mike Bellardes) will also give special performances. Other bands confirmed include the Odd Numbers, Clay Wheels, Krenshaw, Curbside, Outtaline, the Shitkickers, Small Time Napoleons, Gary & Babs, Shadow Cabinet, Grindstorm and Aggro. Rumor has it Papa Roach could swing through the South Bay in early May as part of its Raid the Nation tour with Fear Factory and Alien Ant Farm. No dates have been officially announced yet . ... It appears former True to Form frontman Ron Taniguchi has officially joined Stitch as its second guitarist. The band is holding a ROCK4AWARENESS concert March 31 at the Cactus with Movement, Luxt and Breach. Artists Against Racism, Planned Parenthood, the Gay Straight Alliance Network and other organizations are scheduled to attend. ... Stunt Monkey, the Timeouts, Short Round, 5606 and Lender are holding a benefit for the Southwest YMCA's youth programs this Friday (March 9) at 7pm at the Los Gatos Outhouse. ... This weekend (March 9-11), the Cactus Club is hosting the California Soul Spectacular. The three-day event features live performances, international DJs and a rare soul record swap and sale. ... East Bay rock band Venus Bleeding holds a CD-release party, for its new disc, Fakelore, this Saturday (Mar. 10) at Bottom of the Hill. Slender and Crazy Crosstops also perform. ... Great American Music Hall in San Francisco is hosting a huge battle of the bands called Exposure on March 11. The big event runs 11am-midnight, and tickets are $12 in advance.
