LOCAL FARMS stay in business by selling to farmers markets and restaurants, but community supported agriculture, CSAs for short, are becoming increasingly important to the continued existence of these small farms. As a member of a CSA, you buy a "share" of the output of a farm, and in return you get a box of just-picked produce each week. You can't get fresher, better-tasting produce, and it helps keep local farms alive. Here are five CSAs that distribute their produce at locations throughout Santa Clara and San Mateo counties.
Fully Belly Farm: Drop-off sites in Fremont, Mountain View and Palo Alto. Call 530.796.2214 for information.
Hidden Villa Farm and Wilderness: Pick up fresh produce on the site of this 1,650-acre farm in Los Altos Hills. Call 650.949.8647 for more information.
Live Earth Farm: Drop-off sites throughout Santa Clara and San Mateo counties. Go to www.liveearthfarm.com or call 831.763.2448 for more information.
Mariquita Farm and High Ground:
These two farms have joined forces to grow a wide variety of produce for their CSA members. Drop-off locations throughout Silicon Valley. Go to mariquita.com or call 831.786,0625 for more information.
Morris Grassfed Beef: While most CSA programs offer fresh produce, San Juan Bautista's Morris Grassfed Beef offers a "split half" of beef, about 80 to 100 pounds of top-quality, range-fed beef. It's generally available in June. Check out morrisgrassfed.com or call 831.623.2833 for more information.
