Montalvo Moments

[whitespace] Phil Collins Saratoga Bound: Phil Collins performs June 12-13 at the Historic Mountain Winery with his big band.

Big names fill the roster for Performing Arts Series at Montalvo and the Winery

By Michael S. Gant

PHIL COLLINS, Vince Gill, Gladys Knight, Wynton Marsalis and Bill Cosby are among the scores of big-name performers set to appear in Saratoga this summer as part of the 43rd Performing Arts Series, which includes shows at both Villa Montalvo (in the Carriage House and the Garden Theater and on the Front Lawn) and the Historic Mountain Winery. Other highlights of the crowded schedule, which kicks off in April and runs all the way into 1999, include the Art Farmer Quintet, Ray Davies, Bela Fleck, Roomful of Blues, Leon Russell, Judy Collins and John Hiatt (all at Montalvo); and Huey Lewis and the News, Tom Jones, David Sanborn, Robert Cray, Smokey Robinson, Boz Scaggs and Dave Brubeck (at the winery).

Of special interest this season is the expanded classical lineup at the intimate Carriage House Theater. The Moscow Chamber Orchestra (April 29) and Juilliard String Quartet (May 8) will be followed in the fall by Jean Phillippe Collard (Oct. 9), violin virtuoso Kennedy (who used to be more modestly known as Nigel Kennedy; Nov. 24), the Kronos String Quartet (Jan. 22, 1999), the renowned Academy of St. Martin in the Fields (March 3, 1999) and the Takacs String Quartet (March 23, 1999). The piece de resistance, at least for opera fans, will be a recital by diva Frederica von Stade (Aug. 14) at the Garden Theater.

Ticket sales start April 19. If you're on the mailing list, you can order ahead of that date; it's still possible to get on the list by sending a request to Villa Montalvo, P.O. Box 158, Saratoga, CA 95071. For details, call 408/961-5858. Remember, not all acts have been confirmed; so always call ahead to check. As the season progresses, Metroactive will provide previews, reviews and links for the big shows, so keep coming back.
